When the moon comes over the mountain
Every beam brings a dream, dear, of you
Once again we’ll stroll 'neath the mountain
Through that rose-covered valley we knew
Each day is grey and dreary
But the night is bright and cheery
When the moon comes over the mountain
I’ll be alone with my memories of you
Kate Smith recorded those offensive songs in the early 30s, when racism was rampant in the entertainment industry. Who’s next? Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, Fred Astaire, Shirley Temple, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland? They’ve all done racist things in their careers. Why are we picking on Kate, a proud democrat who believed in equality for all? What happened to historical context? The Flyers should be ashamed.
I remember telling Santa Claus when I was in 1st grade back in 1952 I had to hurry home so I can hear Kate Smith sing when the moon comes over the mountain
My mom and I were fans of the Kate Smith show, She was a great singer. I remember "God Bless America" each weekday before I started going to kindergarten
BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES,ARE MADE OF THIS. SO BEAUTIFUL A TIME IN AMERICA,THAT WILL NEVER BE AGAIN...SO BEAUTIFUL...SO SAD..I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND MY COMMENT? GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL HER CHILDREN....AMEN.
Thank you for this lovely song by the wonderful Kate Smith. She always had such a kind, charming manner about her. I wish that our modern performers and shows were so respectful to themselves and their audiences. Thank you for sharing!
Tippi Hedren's memoir brought me here.
Tippi Hedren is one of my favorite actresses from the 1960s. I remember when I first saw her in Hitchcock's The Birds, I was immediately captivated by her beauty and most of all, her acting style which showed that this is a woman of the kind of elegance and mannerisms that you don't see very much these days.
I read up a bit about her and how she helped a lot of Vietnamese women who were running from their country during the war there, by introducing them to manicures. That's what made me even MORE interested in her. So the next time you walk by a nail salon, think of Tippi Hedren.
In her memoir, which I have the readers advanced copy. The book will be released November 1st this year. Anyway, in her memior, she mentions how this was her favorite song when she was little. And that's what brought me here.
When I was, maybe 4 years-old, I remember that Kate Smith had an afternoon show on television back in the early 1950's. I remember that she always closed the show by singing this song. I thought it was beautiful then and I still feel that way. Thanks for posting this.
My grandfather who passed a way 4 years ago, used to sing this to me. It was his version though. I had a form of Colic or something when I was little and I would cry for 2 hours each night for MONTHS, but when he came over everything would be fine and I would calm down when he would sing this song.
I remember her show coming and always loved to hear her sing. She had a beautiful voice..every time I heard this song I would think of my Mom and Dad, thanks for sharing this site.
Kate was loved by the public. She was probably the most successful singer of pop songs. She never married. Her weight never seemed to matter to her public.
