I like the Vogues version too but I love the background dancers, whose names will never be known. There was probably a pool of dancers, they may have gotten one rehearsal - without Petula - and probably had three alternates to cover no-shows. So few performances feature the go-go or hand-gesture dancers any more. Instead there's probably some really overdone CGI effects on giant screens behind the singer/band that cost way more than hiring some dancing girls. I miss the dancing girls and it's what I love about these old videos. Check out the video of "I Fought The Law". It's lip-synced but there's a whole crew of dancing girls and they're all waving pistols in both hands! I love this old stuff. Oh yeah the Vogues video of "You're The One" has dancing girls too. Bill is the lead voice of the Vogues but Hugh does those high tenor riffs.
Another good song I had forgotten from not having Heard it in so many years. I liked this song and still do. Petula's voice is as good as it ever was on this recording. Great!!
Thanks. She was in phenomenal voice that night. But you can see her give the conductor a couple of looks about the tempo, which she seems to have wanted a little faster. Cheers.
Petula Clark is often referred to as "The First Lady of the British Invasion", but she is actually ten years older than nearly all of the other pop/rock acts from that era who found success in America and around the world.
She was in her early thirties in 1964; most of her fellow British rock acts were between 19 and 24 years of age.
"Downtown" is the first record album I ever bought.I knew that she wrote/cowrote this song, but I had never heard her version until now. We saw her in concert about 4 years ago, and she still looked and sounded great! Wonderful singer!!!!!
In Aus, Petula's version was the one that got the airplay and I still feel hers was a better version than the Vogues. Same as I preferred her "Don't Sleep in the Subway" to Sinatra's.
I am a child of the 60's and have never heard Petula sing this (that I can remember). It was always the version of the Vogues that I loved (and still do). This is wonderful though, and I wonder if they ever sang this together??
