Great track...remember wearing out my old History Of British Rock lps and this was one of the top plays...prefer the McCoys original a bit, but this has a great drive...thanks for the share
This song takes me right back to the 60s. Best years of my life. They were called the Mersey beats back then. And l had long blond hair, and eyes of blue too. Lol.
OMG can you believe this is the FIRST time I have heard the Original version ... I have only heard David Bowie's cover from Pin- Ups!!!! Fantastic!! no wonder he liked this enough to cover it!!
"Sorrow" was actually written in the 1960's by The Strangeloves, a bunch of boys out of Brooklyn NYC. The McCoys and The Merseys covered the song in the 1960's. The Strangeloves had a big hit with their song 'I Want Candy'.
I've been reading some of the postings here; particularly those of Mr. Giltrap. I met one of the men who wrote this song. It was 1976, and it was in a recording studio on the eighth flr. of Radio City Music Hall, New York City. He was producing Blondie's first record at the time. I remember him mentioning that he loved the Bowie version of it. I'm presuming that he liked this one, too (though he didn't mention it).
Just listened to a Jack Bruce interview: he and Jimmy Page as session musicians, played on this song together; he on bass of course and Page on guitar...interesting bit of trivia.
One of the greatest melodies and songs to be created ever. Even though I love the Beatles, I have to say that this is easily as good as if not better than a lot of their tunes. Perfect marriage of tune and words.
Well holy crap..... I knew something was up when I heard George Harrison sing a line from this song on a BEATLE album.... (the song "It's All Too Much" from Yellow Submarine album) and I thought ...."Wait a minute ! That's Bowie ! No way that was from 1968 !"
Geeez... I'm 54 and just now "got it'.
Always new stuff to learn ! Especially when.... ........
what the hell was I typing about
Not the original as that was by the Mcoys in the USA but my fave!,Tony Crane & Billy Kinsey had been in The Merseybeats until the band split,on this recording they had The top session men!,Jimmy Page,John Paul before Led Zep,Jack Bruce(Cream)on upright Bass,Clem Cattinni (the Outlaws,Tornados,Pirates,Dusty Springfield,Chris Farlowe,Thunderclap Newman)some line up indeed!.
One of the great gems of Mersey Beat, easily one of the 20 greatest songs to come out of the entire explosion, and probably the most underrated of any of them.
