Heard that Micky did this in one take. Not bad for someone who had " no talent" (along w/his fellow Monkees)..Their new album sounds unbelievable. They should be in The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
Breaking Bad brought me here! Hadn't heard this song in years, forgot all about it, then heard it over a montage and I haven't stopped listening since :)
These guys were brilliant musically and artistically. They are way better than a lot of bands today who have no sense of musical credibility and yes they did become musicians. A lot of artists and groups today even those who have won the grammys cannot be and will never be on the same level as the Monkees. The Rock and Roll Hall of fame and the grammys is a lot of political crap and I have never watched these shows because the Monkees have not been given their due respect via these TV and musical mediums. Love you Monkees!!!
I was mortified when, in 1969, I brought my Daydream Believer 45 in to my kindergarten class, only to have the teacher play this on the flip side, lol. I didn't realize what a cool this song was at the time. Micky Dolenz is one of best rock vocalists of all time. They could/should be in the RHOF on that merit alone.
Micky is one of the best vocalists and seriously under appreciated as are all of the Monkees. One of the producers said it was like catching lightening in a bottle with how lucky they were to get these four very talented guys. The Monkees may have started as a tv show but their own talent couldn't be hidden and came through. They deserve a lot more respect than they've gotten.
And as a note Mike Nesmith was pretty much the genius who developed MTV, back when it was worth watching.
A friend of mine interviewed Micky a few years ago and he told him that he did the vocals of this song in one take. He was reading the words off a piece of paper, but it's still no small feat to get this 'zactly right the first time.
I first heard this song when I was 10.I learned the words but was never able to sing them that fast.I always marveled at Micky's ability to do this.well I'm 50 now and I've almost got it. (singing the words that fast)only about 2 lines I still screw up on.but given maybe another week or so and I will get it. :) I will always love The Monkees
