By mid 1969, the wheels were already in motion for Diana Ross's transtition out of "The Supremes" and into a solo career. Berry Gordy spent months looking for a suitable replacement when he heard a relatively unknown young female singer perform in Miami one evening. Struck by how similiar her vocal range was to Diana Ross, he invited her back to Detroit for an audition. That singer of course was Jean Terrell and the rest is history. It's not hard to see why Gordy chose her. She has a high range with a smooth delivery and sounds enough like her predecessor not to alienate longtime fans of the group plus make "The Supremes" sound fresh and exciting at the same time.  The move paid off and the group continued having chart success and we're able to keep the momentum moving for a few more years......

Initial proof that the group was by no means finished when Diana left.

I'm not in the anti-Diana camp by any means, but this is easily the best thing they ever did. Glorious.

As good as Diana Ross is, the Supremes never really NEEDED her.
