I've been wondering the same thing. I get the feeling it's a mix between fear, guilt, and anger. Believing in God is ingrained into... their culture, I guess, so it's hard to go back on that but they are deeply invested in living however they want-->living like crooked men. So there's this mix of fear and guilt and selfishness, but they're also angry at God for their situation. In the South, as depicted by TPB, everything's choke, and grit, and thirst and they're angry at God for their suffering
