An absolutely perfect arrangement and performance for this song. It just drips of frustration and hopelessness. Even the fuzzy guitars, which might otherwise make it sound dated, just add to the stickiness and discomfort of the singer. And the bright, melodic arpeggio towards the end shows there's just a little, little hope things will someday be better. A lot of people have done this song over the years, but Janis Joplin and Big Brother's version delivers the message better than anyone else. The music and performance fit the song perfectly.

Everyone fixed on Janis, and rite fully so, but the band was the talent. I think most people missed that!

Eargasm, this one. 

I can remember when this album came out everybody was disappointed with it. Summertime was on it, but Janis live could sing this one for a long time with people begging her not to stop. Great San Francisco groups had to be seen live. Record companies was better than nothing, the real action was in the Park. An average crowd might be around 8,000- 12, 000. Thousands dancing, everybody very high. The whole scene without real problems. We had a young baby, but our 6-8 year old would disappear into the crowd. He might be gone most of the day. We would ask him where he went, he would say he found somebody to play with. A very different world in those days. He is a computer programmer in San Diego. Big Brother and the Holding Company was always a favorite. The fun part was that the great SF groups had only a short walk to the park, and back home. Great times for most of the crowd, but times were shorter for some. Certain people told Janis that she was wasting her time with Big Brother, but some us of knew better. She was very special as Big Brother and the Holding Company.

That two-guitar counterpoint thing.. :-O Is there any other rock song that utilizes counterpoint this way?? It's amazing

I can remember Janis at the Avalon ball room in San Francisco Big brother and the holding company. Always made my night. There was one night Janis and big brother was playing. And Grace Slick and the Airplane showed . Battle of the Bands. Hey of a show. 2dollars and 50 cents a person. Never get those prices again. Never have a night like either
