Don Costa is my favorite arranger, but I think he was under pressure, and did this knockoff quickly..(he jumped the shark) While it is true what Chris Mulwee said..he did make it his own, and that part is great...I feel it barely came off in the recording session. the drummer(Hal Blaine, or whoever) tried to keep it coherent by pushing it along...Costa patterned his version after Hank Mancini's...neither Hank nor Dons version have the expertise of the George Cates arrangement for Welk, which is a masterpiece in my opinion.
Sounds like a somewhat faster version of Henry Mancini's original, with almost a disco-like beat. And, like Henry's original, it has that "Good Evening Friends" ending, which is not present on Lawrence Welk's or the Miniature Men's cover.
Don Costa seems to have closely followed Mancini's rendition, while at the same time, making it his own. Good job, Don.
