This is the saddest song I've ever heard in my life. Such a plaintive refrain. Without a single lyric it evokes wailing and sorrow; NYC's mean, cold streets; racism & the mean nature of unrestrained capitalism. Best arrangement ever.
Christ The Redeemer indeed! This is a masterpiece composed by the late great pianist Duke Person and played by the late great trumpeter Donald Byrd, whom I played drums on his "CARICATURES" album/CD. RIP Duke Person and RIP Donald Byrd.
When I first heard this song back in the day on WRVR radio, I was pretty young and very new to jazz.
I do believe I may have cried and I know I went right out and bought it.
Thank you Duke and Donald, may you both Rest In Peace.
