In 6th period, my history teacher was playing this song during class today. Some people including myself silently enjoyed the song, other people laughed at how funny her voice was in the song. One person even mocked her voice. The people who laughed at her voice were also the same people who listen to 2010s rap songs during recess almost everyday.

My grandfather was a very white man in the very Deep South, born in 1912. His duty to family precluded his going to college, and so he worked. Long and hard and honestly. He came from farmers in Georgia who knew George Washington Carver. There was not one racist thought in his head that manifested in some perverse action of the stupid and powerless. By which I am saying, he was a learned man and he had a deep soul. His favorite singer—in a lifetime that encompassed popular World War I songs and Hollywood tunes and, bless my soul, Lawrence Welk—was Miss Ella Fitzgerald. He told Me she had perfect pitch, and whatever the heck that was, no clue had I. I thought "horseshoes." She surely didn't play baseball. When I heard this single recording, of all the recordings I might have heard in my life—ah. Aaaahhhh. Something about her lifted his soul. I listen to Ella Fitzgerald with that in mind sometimes. Not that you need care. I wrote this for Granddaddy.

The perfect clarity of Ella’s voice just wipes me out. Only one of her, that’s for sure.

Now you say you're lonely You cry the long night through Well, you can cry me a river Cry me a river I cried a river over you Now you say you're sorry For being so untrue Well, you can cry me a river Cry me a river 'Cause I cried, I cried, I cried a river over you You drove me, nearly drove me, out of my head While you never shed a tear Remember, I remember, all that you said? You told me love was too plebeian Told me you were through with me and And now you say, you say you love me Well, just to prove you do Come on and cry me a river Cry me a river 'Cause I cried a river over you You drove me, nearly drove me, out of my head While you never shed a tear Remember, I remember, all that you said? Told me love was too plebeian Told me you were through with me and Now, now you say you love me Well, just to prove you do Come on and cry, cry, cry me a river Cry me a river 'Cause I cried a river over you If my pillow could talk, imagine what it would have said Could it be a river of tears I cried instead? So you can cry me a river Daddy, go ahead and cry me a river 'Cause I cried, how I cried a river over you How I cried a river over you

I went to elementary school with Miss Fitzgerald’s son. Transfiguration Catholic School in Los Angeles. She use to sit and wait for him outside in the yard. She was the sweetest lady. She always greeted the kids with a big smile and always a kind word. I didn’t know she was a famous singer. I only knew it was always a pleasure to see her.

Ella's one of the few - very few - singers who doesn't destroy Arthur Hamilton's very creative rhyme of "too plebian" with "through with me an'." Julie London, Streisand and so many others sing it as... Told me love was too plebian Told me you were through with me ...converting the following syllable to "and" and pushing it into the next phrase: "And now you say you love me." Ella could do the most creative things with phrasing while still respecting the lyrics.
