I was 12 when this first came out. I remember listening to it over and over and loved it every time I heard it, and I didn't know why because it sounded so different than the other stuff I was listening to at the time. I didn't have a real appreciation for vocal talent at that age. I just knew I loved this song every time I heard it. Now when I watch him sing it, I'm thinking DAMN THIS GUY'S AMAZING!

The conga player Papa Dee, was a good friend of my Dad's from Wilmington, DE. We lived in L.A. in the 60's and Dee, known as Big Dee in the 50's, drove to California and he came and had dinner at our house in Canoga Park when I was about 8 years old. About 2 years before this performance.
I listened to WAR all through the 70's and had no idea. I didn't put it together until years after they both died.
Dee was a friend of Lenny Bruce. Jimmy Hendrix walked on stage and jammed with WAR the night before he died.
Story of my life. Two degrees of separation from two huge personal heroes and I didn't figure it out until I was 55.
