I love Gerry Rafferty's voice, such a lovely sound - it is like an instrument in itself. Sad that he fell prey to the demon drink. It is used as a crutch by so many, often to hide shyness and self doubt. And some of the most gifted and special people, suffer the most crippling self doubt, it is one of life's great ironies. His old mate Billy Connolly was also a boozer but Billy gave it up years ago when he saw it was threatening to kill his talents and perhaps him too. A shame Gerry couldn't have done the same, he died too young.

I spent a week at Chipping Norton Recording Studios while Gerald was recording this. Many good memories - particularly Betsy Murphy (Hugh's Wife) teaching me to play pool! (Thanks Betsy!). They had a video room (rare back then) with every episode of Python on Betamax - very educational for an 11 year old!
