This is one of those tracks that just make you want to get an instrument out and play along yourself. Mann's music is seldom particularly complex, (not to say that he could not be, when he wanted to), but it is easy to listen to, often VERY catchy, ant it MAKES LIFE BETTER! Enough said!
THE COLLEGE I ATTENDED IN OHIO WAS NEAR LAKE ERIE. PICKED UP A RADIO STATION OUT OF DETROIT THAT PROGRAMMED A JAZZ SHOW EACH MORNING. THIS SONG WAS THE THEME FOR THE SHOW. I WAS GROOVING EVERY MORNING. ROY AYERS ON THE VIBES.
When this came out I was in Vietnam flying helicopters for the US Army. Whenever we got a break from the war we gathered to get cooled off & put this album on to play. It's still my favorite song from those bitter-sweet memories, when we thanked God we had made it back one more time and saluted those of us who hadn't.
These postings are the most positive and intelligent I have ever read on You Tube. They are all civil and well worded. It shows you what kind of well minded individuals were attracted to the music of Herbie Mann and that of these great musicians. And yes, John Geers, I nearly wore out my vinyl copy as well.
I first heard this in the summer of 1969 at my grandma Mary Jones apartment on Gramercy Place in Los Angeles. She loved this song, may she rest in heaven!
THIS....is a muddafuggin' GROOVE!
Had this LP on in heavy rotation back in the early 70's. Sounds as fresh & beautiful as the first time I ever heard it!
Summer of '69--So much cool stuff goin' on.This was one of those tunes that made me ( at a tender age of 16) decide to be a pro musician. To hear it again is like entering a time machine to take me back to a happier, innocent time & space. When playing this song over the ensuing decades, I've found no problem finding people of all generations still diggin' it. Thanx Herbie!!
