Technique wise Jimmy Smith was superior, sound wise McDuff was my favorite. Both were great and really it's all really subjective. Who do you like the best? Nothing else really matters. I was fortunate enough to see McDuff in his prime and then again about 20 years later. I just love his sound. This is vintage McDuff.
Two dislikes. Honest to God, how could ANYONE not like this? One of the happiest pieces of music ever recorded, with the best groove ever and really brilliant solos. It always picks me up - ALWAYS!!
I saw Cpt. Jack twice, but not playing at the gigs, he was catching John McLaughlin and the Free Spirits in '95 in Mpls.John introduced him from the stage. The other show was Elvin Jones at The Dakota, St.Paul. Elvin was ripping on him from behind the drums. Elvin was joking around. When I think of the Captain, I think of those times. What a great player!
bbbbbbut, what about McGriff? there are lots of great organists with great sounds. Don't forget Don Patterson, who sounded so good just for his playing bass.
