What you say is interesting, I guess that he developed very much in his playing what Debussy said often to his interpreters and students: that a lot of passages need to be played as the piano had no hammers. And in fact his sound is unique. That restraint and release on weight needs a lot of control and concentration, I agree with Robbiegalgal, and I share all expressions of love to John Lewis from these pages.
What a treasure. His album "Private Concert", which includes a solo studio recording of Milano, is an out-and-out masterpiece, and his covers of the Well-Tempered Clavier are wonderful and well worth hunting down. So underrated.
