This man John Prine is one of the most prolific writers of great songs ever, including this one. And he gets betterwith time, kind of like my 'friend' Tom Petty (RIP).
Saw John play at the old Ontario Place (revolving stage) form in Toronto, Ontario Canada back in the mid 70's. Now an amphitheater called Budweiser Amphitheater. John was drunk. Wasn't a good show. Came back the next year. First thing he said when he came out on his own. I sure hope a lot of you people were here last year. Cause I was drunk. I owe you a show. Proceeded to play on his own half a dozen songs. Then the band came out and played with John for over an hour. John said the band needed a break. Off they went. John stayed and played another half dozen songs on his own. The band joined him to continue on with the show. Great night. Thanks John. You did it right. Lifetime fan.
When I was a young man, I once spent the evening having drinks with an older gentleman and we laughed and talked about life in general. At the end, he introduced himself as John Prine. I hadn't heard of him before. He was a lovely person to meet.
I know a guy that's got a lot to lose.
He's a pretty nice fellow but he's kind of confused.
He's got muscles in his head that ain't never been used.
Thinks he own half of this town.
Starts drinking heavy, gets a big red nose.
Beats his old lady with a rubber hose,
Then he takes her out to dinner and buys her new clothes.
That's the way that the world goes 'round.
That's the way that the world goes 'round.
You're up one day and the next you're down.
It's half an inch of water and you think you're gonna drown.
That's the way that the world goes 'round.
I was sitting in the bathtub counting my toes,
When the radiator broke, water all froze.
I got stuck in the ice without my clothes,
Naked as the eyes of a clown.
I was crying ice cubes hoping I'd croak,
When the sun come through the window, the ice all broke.
I stood up and laughed thought it was a joke
That's the way that the world goes 'round.
When I gave up my athletic scholarship to a US university and wasn't sure how I would ever get over the disappointment and embarrassment of what I saw at the time as having failed at something I had worked so hard for, my Dad put this song on as we pulled away from campus; I will never forget that or how this song made me think, in that moment - maybe this isn't the end of the world, after all? Thank you, John - I'll always love you for that :D

I've suffered from depression most of my life. Thank God I found John Prine's music/poetry. He's better than any pill or shrink as far as I'm concerned.
