Personal Jesus, recorded by Depeche Mode for their album "Violator", the bands seventh studio album released in March 1990. Personal Jesus was released as a single in August 1989, and was their first top 40 hit since " People are People" from 1984. This song has been covered by Johnny Cash, Gravity Kills, Marilyn Manson, Sammy Hagar, Jerry Williams, Lollipop Lust Kill, Nina Hagen, Richard Cheese, and Mindless Self Indulgence...though none of these other covers have the panache of the one by Johnny Cash.

Previously, I couldn't IMAGINE this song without synthesizers and that distinctive drum beat. ONLY Johnny Cash, the Man in Black, could've pulled this off. He did JUSTICE to the song!

The original Depeche Mode recording is ironic: they may have been writing about a televangelist bilking his followers through "prayer lines". What Johnny Cash did that was so remarkable is that he looked at this song, and these lyrics, and saw something intensely personal and spiritual. Jesus IS personal to Christians -- He certainly was to Johnny Cash, who wrestled demons and his inner darkness all his life. I'm sure others have different opinions, but according to the fundamental teachings of Christianity we ALL have a Personal Jesus. And that was what Johnny Cash saw in this song.

I suspect the reason that Johnny's cover have such power is that he only covered songs that touched him and he then put that emotion back into his interpretation.
