Saw JM in person about 10 yrs ago and he was incredible. Even at that age, he hit and held the high note in MARIA perfectly right on pitch! HE is the greatest for songs that tell the story of love!

This is one of those Mathis gems that you never hear other vocalists attempt to sing, mostly I imagine because they feel they could never top it, and since he so "owns" the song, why even try.

Johnny Mathis was the best friend an echo chamber ever had. One of my favorites, and the only recording by Mr. Mathis, or anyone of which I am aware, where the vocalist draws such heavy breaths into the microphone. (Love the heavenly plucking on the harp!)
