I believe Paul Thomas Anderson is the only western director, working today, who can turn film into literature. filmic literature, if there is such a thing. you know how long it takes to read a page in a book. Denis Villeneuve perhaps - but I think he reads faster than Anderson!
From 1:06 thru 1:20 definitely has the Takemitsu influence and then somehow morphs into Ligeti and Penderecki all the way to 1:34. Does anyone else hear this?
Anderson yes with the 70mm but unlike Kubrick he has gone for original composers. Kubrick would take a bit from ligeti (without authorization) but generally stick to classical compositions, even with wendy carlos re-working classical themes with electronic instruments.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but i'm pretty sure that the intro of this song is based off of the last 30 seconds of Polymorphia by Penderecki, who is one of Greenwood's favorite composers. It's interesting because Greenwood inverted it. Listen, you'll see what i mean.

Captures the wonders of the universe, the inside universe. The Master is an intimate story about loss, nostalgia and conciousness... Damaged souls, from such odd extreme characters, and understanding each other ... Dodd and Freddie... At the same time, in the larger scale, the film points to eternity and the biggest questions of life.
