My mother died today after a long illness. She loved this song. She was a tough cookie with a heart of gold, lived through WW2 and used to tell me about watching the bombers flying overhead - Just a different world to the likes of me. It's oki to cry but you know what? If she were here she would probably just smile and say, "Life goes on". I'm going to miss her.

The metaphor here is: at the circus you send in the clowns when you need to distract the crowd, say when a terrible mishap happens (e.g. a flying trapeze falling, a lion attacks a circus performer, etc.). So, essentially, this song is about a love that blooms a little too late, about someone who finally realizes they are in love with a special person who had been in love with them before but has since moved on from the relationship. Thus, the singer -- who could've been some expert on love -- wants to send in the clowns in order to distract people from focusing on her out of shame and embarrassment for losing out on love and making a huge, costly mistake.
