The definitive version of this song. By the truly incomparable Judy Garland. That vibrato. The aching sadness in her voice. and she was barely 22 when she sang this. Wow!
This is one of those don't touch song in my book. No one sang it better than Judy Garland and no one ever will. There are songs that should never be recorded again.
An effortless rendition of a holiday classic. Judy's voice sounds like liquid honey mixed with spring water, trickling together over rocks in a stream. A talent we won't see again.
Nowadays we all know and hear the more optimistic versions of this song, but I think it misses out of the real beauty of how sad (but hopeful) the original song is. Judy's performance is making me tear up now as I'm writing, lol.
This song was ruined in later versions when they changed the lyrics to try to make it a happy song. It was written as a melancholy, rather sad song. This is the best version. The original lyrics, which were changed for the movie, were very dark.....
