Mahalia.....what can you say?? Me and Mom had her playing at my dad's funeral. We are white, so many of our kinfolk didn't understand, being rather stodgy, this beautiful black woman's spirited singing.
Dad would have loved it.
I fIrst heard this song about 55 years ago, as a child watching and old cartoon (1932) on television. Funny how decades later, I have never forgotten this precious African-American spiritual. Love it!
Christianity is the white man's religion. Let's not forget it was in the name of Jesus that so-called good Christians kept blacks in slavery. Let's not forget the "Jesus of Lubeck" aka "Good Ship Jesus" a slave ship that was chartered in 1563 by Queen Elizabeth.
