There's a famous wartime story about this song and the true power of music to bring us together. Jack Leroy Tueller had played trumpet from a young age and when he joined the army air force he always brought his trumpet with him. One night his playing risked, and saved his life. One dark and rainy night after the unit had been grounded for the night, then Capt. Tueller decided that he really needed to play his music to let off stress, however his Commander warned him of a sniper that was known to be active in the area. He decided to take the risk and, figuring that the sniper was in the same type of situation he was, he decided to play Lilli marlene. The bullet never came. The next day a group of captured soldiers were led through the camp and one of them kept asking who had been playing last night. When Tueller identified himself, the young man burst into tears and offered his hand. He explained in broken english that he had been the sniper; the music had made him think of fiancee and his family and couldn't fire. Tueller willingly shook his hand, and felt no hatred. this was just another scared kid doing what he had been ordered to.
