I was with a group of my buddies stationed aboard a ship in Norfolk, VA enjoying some time off work when we received the sad news of her tragic and untimely death. As I look back on that moment, our collective reaction was such that you would've thought each of us had lost a family member. A local radio station played Minnie songs for what seemed like forever. We toasted to her memory so much that to this day I have no idea how I made it back to my bunk, let alone showed up on time for duty the next day. She was a star among stars with a vocal range that was as great as her musical stature. Fortunately for us, both the universe and human spirit are big enough places to have room to love her alongside other incredible songstresses, like Aretha, Patti, Gladys, Chaka and the list goes on! Minnie, you're undoubtedly now among angels, but your songs live on in all of your fans.
