I LOVE this song! This is actually an answer song to Josephine Bakers "Comme Une Banque" (1936). Compare the melodies, Mistinguett is actually singing this as if she were Josephine Baker. The two had open cat fights and despised one another. The lyrics are a scream!
You actually have a record of this wonderful song? As a collector, I would pay a fortune for it! If you ever conside selling it, just name your price! Thanks
Josephine Bakers song was "I feel like a million" (Comme Une Banque) recorded in 1937 Je Cherche Un Millionaire (I WANT A Millionaire), recorded 1938, was Mistinguett's response to Bakers song. They openly displayed hatred towards one another. Mistinguett implictly suggests Baker is a prostitute, singing "I want a millionaire, that's why I walk the boulevards"
Yes, I remember the scene in the play.
But why do you say Suzy S was "supposed" to sing--did she not actually sing, at least in the script?
By the way, HippyDippy finally solved the meaning of the word "mues"--see his comment under Warsaw Ghetto Tango...
