Love and learn
Take your turn
Somewhere there’s a feather
Falling slowly from the sky
You need not know the reason why.
Stand apart
Hear your heart
Someday there will be Another lover till the end
You need not hold your breath till then.
Don’t ask me to explain to you
There’s nothing to remain but what we see.
Fall and climb
Take your time
Somehow you must live up To the precedents you’ve set
You need not hope for answers yet.
Don’t ask me how I kno w it now
The future does not show itself to me.
So love and learn
Take your turn
Somewhere there’s a feather
The juxtaposition of a very young Jackson Browne's innocent lyric and beautiful melody, laden with strings, contrasted by Nico's fragile, chilly vocal, trying but failing to be soft and sweet, is where the beauty of this song (and most of the Chelsea Girl LP) lies, especially as Nico in retrospect turned out to be a relatively tragic figure. It's not for all tastes and if it doesn't grab you, fine, but I think for Nico to hit you emotionally you have to have taken a long and varied musical journey, down at least a few dark paths. This song in particular is like an emergence back into the light; like the saddest Sunday morning hangover; like the ugly yearning to be beautiful.
Love and learn
Take your turn
Somewhere there's a feather
Falling slowly from the sky
You need not know the reason why.
Stand apart
Hear your heart
Someday there will be
Another lover till the end
You need not hold your breath till then.
Don't ask me to explain to you
There's nothing to remain but what we see.
Fall and climb
Take your time
Somehow you must live up
To the precedents you've set
You need not hope for answers yet.
Don't ask me how I know it now
The future does not show itself to me.
So love and learn
Take your turn
Somewhere there's a feather
Falling slowly from the sky
You need not know the reason why.
Odd that some who are classically trained and non-tonally-deaf cannot evoke the feelings that she does with this song. Whether it was written for her or written to her or just happened to fall upon her, it is wedded to her. Can appreciate that it's not for everyone, a matter of differing sensitivities.
beautiful... i loved nico and saw her at the whisky in LA in 79... she was truly one of a kind and although this is her most conventional record it is still exquisite... listen to the lyrics of this song by jackson browne and then look up the video called scottish widows by remember remember and you will understand what jackson was saying...
