I have marched, protested, boycotted, resisted, donated, written letters, spoken out, tried to live what I believe in.
I have been arrested, beaten, kicked, spat on, had my family threatened, had my employment terminated.
I am not special, I am one of untold millions past and present, most of whom have done more, and suffered more.
I am growing old, and won't live to see the better world I dream of.
But, deep in my heart, I won't stop believing, so I must keep trying.
We shall overcome, some day.
I'm sad about Pete Seeger dying, not really because he died; you make it to 94 and you've done very, very well.
But who's the next Pete Seeger? That's the tragedy. We don't have anyone in the bullpen.
only a couple of days ago me and several hundred others were singing this in a police kettle (containment) in Birmingham, UK during a student protest. We did it, we sang it, it kept up our spirits in the pouring rain and cold for 4 hours. Join us, participate, don't just listen, do, we have a world to win.
My father was a life long Union activist and I grew up on protest lines around the nation for workers rights and civil rights singing these songs hand and in hand with strangers of all colors and ages. I can't hear these songs without crying, thinking of all that hope and good intention.
I love well meaning hard working people, and though the unions have been battered so terribly in the US, I still hope some day we will overcome all the classism and finally become one tribe...
Me too! I still remember that wonderful day 50 years ago when this song was all over the television and the radio, sung by various artists. When Martin Luther King said his words, now famous, about who we should be, who we eventually must be, if we are to survive ourselves and our inner demons.
It made me understand that we are ALL human beings and that one day, we shall ALL overcome the hatred and prejudice within our hearts. And what a wonderful day that shall be! Cheers!
This song brings me to tears. I grew up in Alabama and my father, uncles, cousins fought in the Vietnam war. My mom, grandmother and grandad could not eat in a restaurant, stay in a motels.
