When I was just a lad of ten my father said to me Come here and take a lesson from the lovely lemon tree
Don’t put your fate in love my boy my father said to me
I fear you’ll find that love is like the lovely lemon tree
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower’s sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impssible to eat
Lemon tree very pretty and the lemon flower’s sweet
But the fruit of the poor lemon is impssible to eat
One day beneath the lemon tree my love and I did lie
A girl so sweet that when she smiles the star grows in the sky
We passed that summer lost in love beneath the lemon tree
The music of her laughter hit my father’s words for me Lemon tree very pretty…
Lemon tree very pretty…
One day beneath the lemon tree, my love and I did lie,
A girl so sweet that when she smiled, the stars rose in the sky.
We passed that summer lost in love, beneath the lemon tree,
The music of her laughter hid my father's words from me.
(Chorus)
One day she left without a word, she took away the sun.
And in the dark she left behind, I knew what she had done.
She left me for another, it's a common tale but true,
A sadder man, but wiser now, I sing these words to you.
(Chorus)
Did anyone else come here because they were reading a book called "The things they carry" by Tim O'Brien? When curt lemons dies Dave Jensen starts singing "lemon tree" when he is removing curt lemons body parts from a tree, its a Vietnam story if you didn't know... He stepped on an explosive so yeah...
this is just beauuuuutiful too hear love, Love, love, love this timelessly elegantly lovely classic gem of a tune very grooooovvvvvyyyy yeah peace everyone
In the mountains that day, I watched Lemon turn sideways. He
laughed and said something to Rat Kiley. Then he took a peculiar half
step, moving from shade into bright sunlight, and the booby-trapped 105
round blew him into a tree. The parts were just hanging there, so Dave
Jensen and I were ordered to shinny up and peel him off. I remember the
white bone of an arm. I remember pieces of skin and something wet and
yellow that must've been the intestines. The gore was horrible, and stays
with me. But what wakes me up twenty years later is Dave Jensen
singing "Lemon Tree" as we threw down the parts.
Can't help being the catechist that I am. ( I teach teens in Sunday School). If we wait for true love , it is so much sweeter. The lemon can deceive us. True sweetness comes when we wait for fruit to ripen.
Folk songs like this this, to me, were always precious. They somehow seem to hold truths for all ages. My regret is that I had no children. To those of you who do, please pass this on ! There is much wisdom in songs such as this.
They'll never be a another Peter, Paul, and Mary. I'm glad we have their songs recorded for future generations to hear and enjoy. Something very spiritual about that group that can't be defined.
OMG... The ones who grew up hearing this music, were influenced by something was so strong, something so powerful that it shaped us into our adulthoods. Music like this moves us, in ways that cleanse our souls and hearts. It was written out of passion, and love for humanity. No wonder why as I listen to it… I get shivers

-The Things They Carried
The thing I love about this comment section is that half of the comments here are enjoying the nice folk tune while the other half is just having this big collective Vietnam flashback.
