Lullaby of Birdland, that's what I
Always hear when you sigh
Never in my wordland
Could there be ways to reveal
In a phrase how I feel
Have you ever heard two turtle doves
Bill and coo when they love?
That's the kind of magic
Music we make with our lips when we kiss
And there's a weepy old willow
He really knows how to cry
That's how I'd cry in my pillow
If you should tell me farewell and goodbye
Lullaby of Birdland whisper low
Kiss me sweet and we'll go
Flyin' high in Birdland
High in the sky up above
All because we're in love
I'd like to share the personnel on this cut:
Sarah Vaughan – vocals
Clifford Brown – trumpet
Paul Quinichette – tenor saxophone
Herbie Mann – flute
Jimmy Jones – piano
Joe Benjamin – bass
Roy Haynes – drums
Lullaby of birdland
That's what I
Always hear, when you sigh
Never in my wordland
could there ways to reveal
in a phrase, how I feel
Have you ever heard two turtledoves
Bill and coo

And there's a weepy ol' willow
He really knows how to cry
That's how I cry on my pillow
If you should tell me
farewell and goodbye
Lullaby of birdland
whisper low
kiss me sweet, and we'll go
flying high in birdland,
high in the sky up above
all because we're in love
damn, Amy winehouse must have really liked sarah's version of this song.
1) she references sarah in her song October song
2) October song's chorus has the same melody as this song's chorus
3) the intro to her album frank, where amy scats a bit, sounds exactly like sarah scatting from 3:08-3:16
I remember hearing this song when I was a kid and I know I used to try to sing it. I had the pleasure and privilege to see/hear her perform in my lifetime. Truly one of the greatest voices of the 20th century IMHO.
