In my "humble" opinion, he can't be beaten in his understanding of the various problems that life throws to a person. Have been a follower for over 40 years and he is still brilliant, even with a voice a little "rustier" with age. A true master songster.
It still baffles me how everyone overlooked this lyrical genius from Detroit. It took me one good listen to his available catalog and I was a true fan.
And I'll forget about the girl that said no
Then I'll tell who I want where to go
And I'll forget about your lies and deceit
And your attempts to be so discreet
Maybe today, yeah
I'll slip away
And you can keep your symbols of success
Then I'll pursue my own happiness
And you can keep your clocks and routines
Then I'll go mend all my shattered dreams
Maybe today, yeah
I'll slip away
'Cause you've been down on me for too long
And for too long I just put you on
Now I'm tired of lying and I'm sick of trying
Cause I'm losing who I really am
And I'm not choosing to be like them
And if you get bored and you got loneliness
Or it's dislike for me you express
I won't care if you're right or you're wrong
I won't care cause you see I'll be gone
Maybe today, yeah
I'll slip away
Maybe today, yeah
Maybe today, yeah
Maybe today, yeah girl
I'll slip away
One of the best things I have ever heard come from this man at one of his concerts. "Hate is too strong of an emotion to use on some one you don't love."
Saw him decades age in Sydney as a virtual unknown. He blew my mind then just like Dylan. Slipped away into obscurity until searching for Sugarman came along. Thank God the world gets to rediscover A truly exceptional talent with a kind and generous heart.
Subjective of course, but I wonder if the fame that eluded Sixto for 40 years was fate- because his voice to my ears is sweeter and wiser now, and with that bittersweet humility that might have been impossible to achieve with the trappings of fame. Lets face it, he is where his richer peers of his age would love to be now in their careers- blowing the minds of fans young enough to be their great grandchildren. I never heard of Sixto until the film, and the 72 year old is making this middle-aged fan feeling like a teenager who has just discovered a new role model.
