Slim was far more popular in the UK than in America. My mother was a die-hard fan of his. Slim lived near Jacksonville, Florida in his later years, and my mom, when she was around 70 years old and also living in Jacksonville, met Slim in a restaurant and about went crazy with joy. She chatted with him and got his autograph. Hog heaven for her. Often when I visited her she would have a Slim Whitman record playing. When the alien spoof movie Mars Attacks came out, mom heard that it was Slim's voice that destroyed the aliens, and she just had to see it. His voice was unique and kind of cool in some ways. Every once in a while his song I Remember You pops into my head and won't let go for a while.
