This particular setting shows us how dominent Stan is muscially and technically on his instrument. So many great sax players - each a star in his own right -- but over the years, I keep coming back to Stan ... and I still get this thrill .. exactly like the moment I first heard his playing back in 1957 (Moonlight in Vermont w/ Johnnie Smith). What a gift Stan gave us.
You call that a mistake?..When you tongue a reed as Stan was doing to accent the note, it can happen, especially with a new reed!!!..It's a miracle that Stan played at all in view of the surgery he'd had to remove a cancerous tumor...I believe this concert was in May 1990 and he passed away a year later!
This is stellar!! / especially with the phrasing excellence of Tenor man Stan the man Getz, & a stomp'en rhythm section, their will never be another Getz; also note the compositional arranging Genius of the late Billy Byers.
I applaud everything you say about Stan. From Johnny Smith to his final session with Kenny Baron, 3 months before Stan died. His music is still magic to my ears... and always will be.
