Michael McDonald may have made his biggest contribution to any SD track on this one.

Michael McDonald was a member of the touring band with Steely Dan in 73 and 74 I think. He can be heard singing harmony on the many bootleg recordings found on you tube. But he was never a member of corporate entity steely dan which only included the original members who were bought out when they left the group.

Steely Dan really had a way of summing up a lot of my feelings on different subjects. I think it is getting harder to find a welcoming place in this world. One part of the song I really like is 'I think I'll go to the park and watch the children playing. Perhaps I'll find in my head what my heart is saying'. I think he (Donald Fagen, the writer) was talking about the welcoming attitude of children and trying to recapture that feeling. I think for me personally, it isn't so much a place as a person or people that makes all the difference.

Nice choice of images!  It conveys well the dark topics inside so many beautiful Steely Dan songs.

wow! epiphany!! I've thought for 30 years and some, that the lyrics were,  "any world that I WAKE UP to" was what they are singing, never having seen the words. great song, majestically good band, sound to my life back then..... still now, fresh as new york salsa!!

I believe Michael McDonald is singing background vocals in the chorus. I forgot that he was once a part of Steely Dan (before he joined the Doobie Brothers).

This song helped get me through my teenage years.  The feeling of alienation and not being understood by the world is acute, and to know that somebody else felt that same alienation was so comforting.  Great, heartfelt vocal by Fagen, one of his best.

What a beautiful video! The girl dancing in the park was exceptional. I could watch her forever. Makes me feel like dancing, and I CAN'T DANCE

"Katy Lied" was, in my humble opinion, Steely Dan's best album. I dug every song on the album, but this and "Black Friday" were incredible. Donald Fagan's voice conveyes so much, and the music is obviously beautifully conceived and executed. By the way, nice video, and thanks for posting it!

I'll second these two previous comments: Hal Blaine on drums! - and Steely Dan has not become dated.

Sorry to hear about Becker passing away. My favorite band of all time . Life is short. Make the most of it.

This is a little known but beautiful song by Steely Dan. I've read that Fagen and Becker were very unhappy with the sound on this album, and it got mixed critical reviews compared to some of their better known records like Aja and Coundown to Ecstasy. But I love this album top to bottom, and the second side is a hidden gem. This song is my favorite on that second side - beautiful changes, poignant lyrics. And nice video images here, thanks!

jorlev150: Yes, you did the song justice. Especially the kids in the park and the repeat zoom in at the end. I've always had a particular affection for this SD song. Never felt like I was made to fit in this world. Over the decades I have adjusted pretty well. But every time I hear "Any World"... I feel that surely there is a better world out there.
