Gems like this are part of what made music so magical as I was growing up. I hadn't heard this song in probably 30 years and although I didn't recognize it when I heard it recently, it immediately caught my attention. And then I remembered. And here I am back seeking the roots of it.
There are at least two things that make this song a masterpiece in whatever genre it would be best categorized in: the funky baseline (it may be synthesizer), and the way vocals in the chorus are mapped, the key changes I guess somebody might say.
This songs takes me from whatever mood I might be in and uplifts me. Who could ask for more from a song!
Tavares is my favorite R&B group of all time. They quietly dominated the 10 year period of 1973 - 1983...and they had some serious competition. Earth Wind & Fire for example...
When I worked for a limo company in PA, I picked up Tavares, K.C. (Sunshine Band) and Gloria Gainer in Philadelphia for a concert they were performing in Allentown PA (at Musikfest). This was probably about 8 years ago?
The group members of Tavares were the friendliest, most down to earth people from the whole mix. (I was forever put off by the arrogance and snobbery of K.C. and Gloria G.)
Tavares is REALLY a fun band: in their music and in person !!
