If you haven't already done so, read the book by Roddy Doyle that was adapted to the film. As it was written in 1987, I don't know if it is still in print, as I got a copy for my Kindle.

the secret to this is the push and pull between the lead and the background singers. just like sam cooke and lou rawls in the original. sam cooke's version is more soul, this one is more rhythm and blues. i love both.
