For 1979/80, read 2019; as apt today as it ever was, and you can actually hear the venom in Weller’s voice when he spits out those lyrics.

Hi: I'm Kevin Hill: `every generation throws a hero up the pop chart', as Paul Simon rightly declared: in the late 1970's/ early 1980's, Paul Weller `was' that hero: this song has more venom in it than a rattle snake: with lyrics that have proven to be as perceptive then as they are today, 40 years later: like most music, it is irrelevant whether you like or dislike this song: the whole point is, just like today in this `Coronavirus' world, we have our backs to the wall, our politicians in meltdown (literally, in Britain's case at the moment) and no sign of everything returning to `normal' (whatever that means). Still an `angry young man's' song doesn't get much better than this, and Paul Weller was adept at writing such songs: God bless you, Mr. Weller, for being that `angry young man' and for being one of the best songwriters of `popular' music ever. Thank you, Kevin Hill.
