There was a time.... That this was the fever, we danced on.. In fast moving trance.. In cold sweat.  It was 1970; Town: Knokke s/Mer Belgium: dancings: De Hoeve, 050, The Gringo; the Number One, The Barque a Jaques, The Ranch, The Stax.. etc. We danced without poppers or junkpills; We danced cause our girlfriends were wearing miniskirts and looked beautiful.. It's passed away.. Like sand between our fingers... There was a time...

This song has to have the coldest rhythm guitar track ever recorded. In the pocket, relentless, and as funky as it gets!

Greatest everything: Singer, dancer, entertainer. Even in his 60s he could outlast his audience. I should know. I was 20 when I saw him and he was nonstop for over two hours. Saw him again the next night. Almost a completely different set list and it was even tougher than the previous night. That was in 1984 and I still haven't recovered.

I'm 64 and have listened to this jam thousands of times before and i am still amazed at the arrangement all put together by what James Brown heard not always the right notes but it always tickles your soul.

For many, perhaps most, it was 'Cold Sweat'. But for me it was 'There Was a Time'. I cannot hear this song and not tap my feet and bob my head - 'you can bet your bottom dollar'.

I love how live this cut is - hearing the full-blown party going on in the background is gold

I would like to thank my parents for playing great music like this around the house when I was a kid and for taking me with them to see James Brown in concert at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium  in the summer of 1991 when I was 14!
