Lady luck and a four leaf clover
Won’t ease this hurt I feel all over
My life was one big special occasion
Until your leavin' damp in the situation
Standing on shakey ground
Ever since you put me down
Standing on shakey ground
Ever since you put me down
My car got respossessed this morning
Harder times I haven’t seen in years
Girl you better throw me a life preserver
I’m about to drown in my own tears
Standing on shakey ground
Ever since you put me down
Standing on shakey ground
Ever since you put me down
Well, well, well standing on shakey ground
Shaking, shakey ground
Standing, standing
Standing on shakey ground
Actually the credit for the funkiness should go to my good friend and the genius behind this song and many other Motown classics is Donald C Baldwin who died a few years ago on the way to my house in Detroit. You can hear him playing the horns and the clarinet solo on the song. He basically wrote and performed the Temps Wings of Love Album released after this one and worked and wrote for many popular acts.
Donald was a trained prodigy who was brilliant at Guitar, Bass, Keyboards, Woodwinds and more. He was classically and jazz trained and was on the road worldwide with bands when he was 17 and not out of high school, yet he could easily jam funk, punk and reggae as well. He was one of the great musician/composers of the last 50 years and like some great talents, was never recognized as he was largely behind the scenes and was managed by someone who squashed Donald's due, by grabbing it for himself and in the end killed both of their careers.
I was privileged to have written many songs with him and we largely jammed as a team for a few decades. I played one of the Temp songs he wrote as his funeral. We miss you Donnie B.! Rock on Brother.
The funk rushed out and knocked me to my knees when I put this on...Motown, meet P-Funk! Had put on my 3rd AF stripe that day (then Sgt, now SrA)...felt SO good! The Commodores horn section did the job here, too.
Don't get me wrong, I loved David, but I have to say Dennis was so UNDERRATED. He had such a powerful voice and I must admit most of my favorite Temptations songs were fronted by Dennis. Loved those funky 70s. Can't believe 38 people gave this song a thumbs down, but then I guess there's no accounting for taste. RIP Dennis and the rest of the guys who left us way too soon. Their music lives on...Temptations Forever!
