I had the great pleasure of knowing Charlie Rouse. He was a beautiful person,as well as the incredible musician that we are enjoying on this track. He told me that one of the great qualities of Monk's compositions was that they were (for the most part) "simple, and correct".As any good musician knows, achieving this is anything but simple.Thank you again,Thelonious!!
originally from the album "Thelonious Monk Big Band and Quartet in Concert", rec. live at Lincoln Center, Philharmonic Hall, 30 December 1964. Thelonious Monk, piano; Charlie Rouse, tenor sax; Butch Warren, bass; Frank Dunlop, drums.
this may be my favorite monk song. look how far above this is than anything in decades. nothing phony. a tumor in the plastic world of today. original.
Thelonious Monk in my mind was a ... musical novelist... if that makes sense. Each of his songs tell a story and are incomparably unique. They have a lot of character. How that emerges from simple blues or ballad structures is very... well, misterioso.
Again, Monk be like..”go ahead Charls, imma do my tang for a bit, hey Tony gotta lighter?” He gives a lot of freedom and space for Rouse to invent, and as well as the band to Monk,..We listen but somehow joins him and the band also, figuring out what will be the next good note for this tune and that tunr..I think he gives that space also for us on purpose..that’s how hypnotizing and relaxed his music is
No matter how many times I hear this, I can't get tired of it cause it tells a story..... no activity on video, cuz I'm not here to look, I'm here to listen, and if any genius nerd thinks I will buy ANYTHING advertised by placing an ad intrusively in my playlist, I will go out of my way to avoid this product and FOR SURE buy from THEIR COMPETITORS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
