She's part of that transitional period in music that went from rock/punk to the eventual pop crap we have today. But there was a time when no one really dominated, and we had musical artists that created their own sound that was original and pushed the envelope. Then Madonna came along and became a Mega star, forever abolishing the bands making their own sounds and ushering in the crap we have today.

Toyah Wilcox had total original talent. She copied no one. Vibrant music and the videos were spectacular too!  She once thanked me, and called me a gentleman, because I held a door open for her many years ago (Marks and Spencers Birmingham city centre 1977) she was tiny!! but nice though.. A good Birmingham girl. (wonder if she remembers me?)

I understand all of her stuff soooooo much more after seeing the film 'Metropolis'. A lot of her big hair and make up comes from the 'Maria robot' character, who was sent by the autocratic government to inspire havoc amongst the inhabitants of the city. That combined with the Thatcher government (which I wasn't alive for)...

The hooded “Ones!” really mar this vid. Without hoods and side views of the charioteering, this could have been awe-inspiring. Highly enjoyable nonetheless.

i couldnt afford records when younger,got the odd one ,id have loved to be able to get such records as this ,toyah was is amazing and so pretty,i just saw her in an adam ant vid,i had to rewind a bit lol

I am so grateful for my Mum bringing me up with this kind of music. She is a huge fan of her. She dressed up as her for her 50th birthday part and looked so much like her. Haha.

Ah, the early days of pop videos......when they REALLY were imaginative - if abit leftfield and slightly bonkers at times. At least they were original. Those were the days when everyone wanted a 'surreal' pop video.....from Toyah to early Eurythmics.......and Adam Ant to Ultravox. I suppose looking back, the 80's was the decade for the 'surreal' pop video. After this groups became more interested in making more realistic videos....and the magic as gone. 1980's videos are escapist and fantastical. Best of all they're still great to watch today.
