The story goes that, because she so famously rejected the Nazis and sang for Allied soldiers, Goering put a price on her head: a reward in gold for the sniper who killed her. She responded by crossing the Rhine with the US Army and did a concert within rifleshot of the front. Asked why she would risk her life to sing in Germany (to soldiers risking their lives fighting fascism in Europe), she replied: "Auf anstand" --- Out of decency.
(She also gave whole salaries from films for refugees, and was the first to sing in German in Israel. The song? Where Have All the Flowers Gone)
RIP.
if-i-could-wish-something
No one had asked us, when we were still faceless
whether we'd like to live or rather not
Now I'm wandering around alone in a large city,
and I don't know if she's in love with me
I'm looking into living rooms through doors and windows,
and I'm waiting and waiting for something
If I could wish for something
I'd feel awkward
What should I wish for,
a bad or a good time
If I could wish for something
I'd want to be only a bit happy
because if I were too happy
I'd long for being sad
If I could wish for something
I'd feel awkward
What should I wish for,
a bad or a good time
If I could wish for something
I'd want to be only a bit happy
because if I were too happy
I'd long for being sad
