that goes by the name of the sandman
Of a hurricane that s abandoned, i suppose you have missed them
Of a hurricane that s abandoned, that goes by the name of the sandman Sandman, and you ve been here
that goes by the name of the sandman
Cause i understand you ve been running from the man, i almost forgot to ask
of a hurricane that s abandoned
I suppose you have missed them, that goes by the name of the sandman America, he flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
I almost forgot to ask, of a hurricane that s abandoned America, he flies the sky like an eagle in the eye

I understand you ve been running from the man, ain t the fire inside Sandman, he flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
All the planes have been grounded, i understand you ve been running from the man, that goes by the name of the sandman
Cause i understand you ve been running from the man, cause i understand you ve been running from the man

Bunnell wrote this song based on some of those tales he heard, stories about how when stationed in Vietnam, they were afraid to sleep for fear of attack, so they would stay up as long as they could (sometimes with the help of various substances), since sleep could mean death. The "sandman" represents sleep, which they feared. Thus they were always "running from the sandman."
I used to sing this with my dad when I was a little girl. We changed "we ain't had no time to drink that beer" to "we ain't had no time to drink that milk" haha
An Air Force tradition was that when an officer was transferred his buddies would take him to the OC and they'd have a beer in his honor. But in Vietnam they always had to be on alert, so they didn't have a chance to "drink that beer".
In case you're interested, this fascinating photo of indian warriors can be found under the name Crow prisoners taken after the fight of Nov.5, 1887 at the Crow Agency.
effin hell, Some years before my dad died he said "lets go get a beer sometime soon" I agreed, then blew him off. I kinda despised the old guy, because he beat me up a few times when I was a kid, broke his word, and other stuff. Even now, tho, at 60, I recall that missed opportunity whenever I hear this song. If I could do it over, we would be having that beer and evening things out, at long last. RIP, old dad.
Ain't it foggy outside
All the planes have been grounded
Ain't the fire inside?
Let's all go stand around it
Funny, I've been there
And you've been here
And we ain't had no time to drink that beer
'Cause I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
Of a hurricane that's abandoned
Ain't the years gone by fast
I suppose you have missed them
Oh, I almost forgot to ask
Did you hear of my enlistment?
Funny, I've been there
And you've been here
And we ain't had no time to drink that beer
'Cause I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
Of a hurricane that's abandoned
I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
Of a hurricane that's abandoned
I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
Of a hurricane that's abandoned
I understand you've been running from the man
That goes by the name of the Sandman
He flies the sky like an eagle in the eye
Of a hurricane that's abandoned
