I remember everyone singing this at McGoo's in Los Angeles, and later at a pub in Paddington. What great songs we had, and everyone sang them. Thank you for sharing, Cats!
Did William Frawley really introduce this song? I know it's from The Passing Show of 1922, but I can't find any evidence that Frawley was in it. According to Wikipedia, he didn't appear on Broadway until 1925. This might be an urban legend because his character on "I Love Lucy" introduced this song within the "Lucy" universe. Love this version, btw.
This is the version I mentioned after hearing Jimmy Roselli's version. Nobody sounded like Billy Murray, and he never sounded better than on records by the American Quartet. Also, I've lived in South Carolina for 11 years, and there's something to the words of this dusty old classic.
