This clip of CW live is the best one on YT. The others are good, in that they're performed well, but this band is true to the tempo of the released version. As a singer I understand the big smile and chuckles, the pride of working with such good musicians. That's when music is fun!
No doubt, they rehearsed this before the show, but probably just ran through it once. Because, by1967, this song was already a country standard, and played hundreds of times by every country musician in America! A very nice job.
First time I heard this version. Grew up on Buck's. This is really cool and the pedal steel player plays it in C6 tuning, I believe, as opposed to E9 tuning. C6 is what you hear on a lot of Hank Williams recordings. I'm grateful to be turned on to Charlie Walker's sound. San Antonio always was a hotbed of great music ... Gene Thomas and Doug Sahm immediately come to mind.
We did shows back in the day with Charlie, he is missed greatly, he was a super nice guy. I just stopped by to listen to one of the best country music songs of all time. RIP Charlie.

songwriter Harlan Howard's tune "Pick Me Up on Your Way Down", recorded by Charlie Walker, went to No. 2 on the country music charts in late 1958.
Being from San Antonio, Walker was kind of a God. I used to listen to him when he was a DJ on KMAC here. Many great songs, but this was probably his best.
