Mouchette was the name of a French novel about a rebellious teenage girl who commits suicide when she realizes how disliked and alienated she is from society. I don't know if that's the inspiration behind this song, but they share a similar dark atmosphere. This could be the book's anthem.
I keep coming back to this song year after year. I think I can say with solemn conviction; This is as close as it gets if you want to know what depression sounds like. Imagine every time this song plays it captures you. Not in the way that you feel bad for a couple weeks or months so you play this song. No. Every time this song comes up on the station year after year, it says, "oh, you're still in this room?" That is depression. I say this with pride. I think only the depressed know that suicide is not a failure of the person. It is a failure of the people surrounding that person. It truly is.
