I remember hearing this in Hallelujah I'm a Bum and WOW! It was a toned down Jolson with a more natural sound. You could REALLY hear "romance" in his voice in the movie version of the song. It's a gorgeous song.

Interesting, and with Lombardo, somewhat iconic. Not as soulful as his performance of it in "Hallelujah I'm a Bum," but it's still Jolson, the First White Guy With Soul. Two further thoughts:  This version retains the original, oddly contemporary-sounding chord changes (in the bridge) of the movie version (almost as though James Taylor had written them); never have I heard Jolson roll his "r's" as he does here.

For some strange reason I think he did the definitive version. He wings it, as they say. Almost with a sense of humor. Faux sophistication.

Actually this is The Victor Young Orchestra.. it was originally recorded for the Brunswick label. Jolson did record versions of "April Showers" & "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby With A Dixie Melody" backed by Guy Lombardo & The Royal Canadians & they may have been issued as the flip sides to this song & "Hallelujah, I'm A Bum". I was very fortunate to find both 78s together in a thrift store!

He introduced this song. It is too formal here but he sang it superbly in “Hallelujah, I’m a Bum.”

Jolson recorded four songs with Lombardo all in the same session, this one, "Hallelujah, I'm a Bum", "April Showers" and "Rock-a-Bye Your Baby". The 1949 Harmony reissue of this recording does credit Lombardo with Jolson, as do several other sources.

The words are different in this version, than from the version sang by Sinatra, Crosby, or Eddie Fisher. Why were they re-written? Did Rodgers and Hart approve?  Did Larry Hart re-write the words?

There's some inimitable quality of Jolson that simply lifts the spirit. He could deliver a song like few others.
