Bessie died as she was being moved from one hospital to another. The first one would not admit her as she coloured! She died from loss of blood. Thank God we have moved forward!

I agree. I've loved Bessie Smith since I was young and I heard her powerful voice in a night radio broadcast: it was Voice of America. So I bought all(or almost all) her records. Thank you for posting. Now I'm looking for another old blues: " shake it down" but I don't know who sings it (she's a woman, I'm sure). Can you or anybody else tell me about it? Thanks

I've always loved this song. My introduction to this song was when it was used in "The Color Purple" [movie]. SHUG AVERY was singing it in the background during a scene in the movie. BESSIE SMITH was brilliant; and I always enjoy her vocals.
