Take care not to hurt yourself
Beware of the need for help
You might need too much
And people are such
Take care, please, take care
Some people read idea books
And some people have pretty looks
But if your eyes are wide
And all words aside
Take care, please, take care
This sounds a bit like goodbye
In a way it is I guess
As I leave your side
I’ve taken the air
Take care, please, take care
Take care, please, take care
Wow. Count me among the thousands who just discovered this man's great talent (via the RS article). If you're out there in the air, Alex, thank you for sharing your music with us.
My favorite Big Star song. So sad. RIP Alex Chilton; you will be missed:
"This sounds a bit like goodbye. In a way, it is, I guess. As I leave your side, I've taken the air. Take care. Please, take care..."
this album is like a beautiful and sad journey through life. feelings of depression, loneliness, memories, old friendships, happiness, sadness, loss, hope and love. it’s a masterpiece. totally unique. everything – the spaced out production sound– the purity of Chilton’s voice – the minimalist guitar/drum style – the use of stringed section. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but the album is nothing like i’ve heard before. magnificent.
I've been so hooked on the first two Big Star albums that I needed Yo La Tengo to lead me to this beautiful song!
I can't believe their music is from the 70's... it sounds so fresh!

what does the poet mean?
is "she" gonna die without him?
is she gonna "die" in his mind?
is he talking about the space left "unoccupied" when someone you 're meant to be with leaves?
or is he just flying free?
whatever he means, this song always brings me tears.
"Some people read idea books
And some people have pretty looks"
Easily one of the most beautifully depressing and raw songs ever written. Big Star's 'Third' is the musical equivalent to manic depression, with this being one of the sadder tracks on the album.
Third/Sister Lovers is such an amazing album. While much of it is at times depressing and cynical after the events of the first two albums, there's so much tenderness and beauty in "Take Care" and "Blue Moon". It's a respite.
