Dick Simonian     68 years ago  I was going up the stairs to the entrance of Jazz Club called Birdland in nyc. Coming down the stars was Billy  Eckstine and Sarah Vaughn. I'll never forget seeing these   two fantastic artists up close.

Billy Ekstine had a unique voice, once heard never forgotten. I always loved Passing Strangers as well. Up to the age of when I was 10, just as the rock era started, I had stored away in my memory, all these wonderful songs and singers from the previous two or three decades and they've stayed with me and I find myself going back more and more to that music.

Smoother than the smoothest, these days, Ekstine still reigns supreme in my book! :)

2 great musical memories stand out in my 79 years on this earth. In the early 70s Sammy Davis appeared in concert in LA and brought Billy along as an opening act. Mr E just stood there with the mike and with no theatrics in the spotlight with his gold double breasted suit and sang. And he sang. And the sound just lifted that large audience as they bathed in the richness of the man and the voice. (Sammy Davis was no slouch as a singer but even he stood in awe of that great talent) I get goose bumps when I think about that time. Billy was in his prime then. About 25 years later we were living in DC and saw that he was appearing at a blues club in Georgetown (Blues Alley) and we went to see him again. He was much thinner and older and the voice was not quite as rich but we still reveled in hearing him sing realizing that given his age it would be for the last time. At the door I stopped and told him how much we appreciated his music. He was as always gracious and appreciative. Not many years later I read that he had died. I felt a loss RIP Billy

It breaks my heart to read that voices like this one along with Arthur Prysock's and even John Gary's were eliminated from dreams of superstardom after the invasion of Rock and Roll. I was young and loved the British influence as well, but as I've aged, I now realize what was lost. To these great singers I almost feel that I need to...apologize.
