This was one of my favorites as I listened to music with a transistor radio and earplug late at night while walking a vast stretch of barren land, scooping up golf balls as a 14-year-old driving range worker in Oakland, California. It was an unusual song for upbeat Bobby Vinton whose releases had heretofore been little more than musical nursery rhymes. This one, however, conveyed musically,, instrumentally, and vocally, teen-aged angst and alienation - a loner shunning romance for the good of the girl against his own inherent bad nature. The song itself has its merits, and I couldn't help but think what it might have been had someone less candy-ass than Bobby Vinton delivered it with more complex, interpretive vocal menace. But, to my knowledge, no one else ever covered it. Vinton was a fine singer and I give him credit for recording this. An unusual choice of material and compelling song.
